Motivational Pill For Indian Employees

Under the context of the highest attrition rate in India (26.9% as reported by Hay group) it is evident that Indian employees are in dire need of positive inducement. As perceived by many, motivation is the way of bringing out the best in an employee. It involves a motivator who should act tactfully and intelligently to bring about the self realization factor in the person aimed to. India has 487 million labor force out of which 94 % is in the unorganized sectors. However motivation can play an important role in bringing about the changes in the organization and the industry as a whole.

First question in this context is why people need motivation despite of getting the money they are paid for. The answer is simple. It’s in the human nature to get bore of the monotonic things in each and everything they do apart from their daily lives or apart from the work they are passionate about. India’s service sector involves a major part of the GDP where IT/ITES play an important role. The work which mainly involves working for the outsourced work of the clients and some back-office operations consist of work which are generally monotonous in nature. However people try to stick to the profession and in order to break the daily routine goes for a job change leading to attrition. Attrition rate being very high in the IT/ITES and BPO sector is a matter of serious concern as it results in a substantial loss for the company in terms of training costs, operating costs, hiring costs and relieving costs. Here the role of a HR manager comes into picture. The employee retention and motivation can prevent the employees not only in combating the job satisfaction but will also help break the dull and tedious chains at work.

There are many ways of employee motivation or I would rather say there are many solutions to prevent attrition. Some are as follows:
1) Job Rotation-Here an employee/worker is made capable of doing multiple jobs. This enhances the intellectual capital in an organisation and also motivates the employee. In many organizations these policies are hard-embedded and some are trying to develop and integrate it as one of their core policies.

2) Appraisal-This is one of the prime reasons for which the employee is working for. In a developing nation like India most people work for food and not for relaxation and satisfaction as in other countries. Thus increase in salary at the end of the year is looked upon as something much coveted for. Some companies have also introduced the policy of half-yearly or even quarterly appraisals.

3) Incentives-Many companies follow this policy as a motivational tool. Many companies provide quarterly gifts; some companies also arrange parties and some arrange trips. Some organizations have also gone to the extent of naming these expenses as Team-Building expenses.

4) Unbiased managerial approach-Many employees suffer from the effect of a biased approach from the manager on the basis of region, gender or some other factors. This is not a good thing for the India INC. This demotivates employees and put the affected employees in the backstage leading to grievances and ultimately resignation. This approach of the managers should be condemned with strong hands.

5) Training- There should be regular trainings and discussions along with employee-management interactions to address the underlying grievances.

6) Alumni Base-There should be a good alumni base where the employees can discuss their problems anonymously and freely in order to receive proper feedback and help from the alumni.

7) Interaction with Higher Management- There are many managers who like to interact and know the general view of the employees through interactions through social media instead of intranet. General employee can be motivated by this method of active participation in the interactions.

India being one of the fastest growing countries, needs refurbishing HR policies with an employee centric approach, not only across its political sectors but also across the private sectors.HR policies being one of the ways of getting the synergetic effect out of the employees can act as a tool to optimize and utilize the resources available at hand. Following the advanced and modern motivational policies along with available technologies can strengthen India’s position as one of the top notch super powers of the world.
